In a January 22, 2025 report on North America’s lagoon industry, Global Water Intelligence (GWI) called Nexom “the most significant player in the lagoon space.”
The article quotes Nexom Director of Application Engineering Merle Kroeker, providing context for changes in how lagoons are regulated: “There are certain US states that work out the total amount of a nutrient the watershed can take, then they divide that across the population and give every plant a percentage they can contribute,” he is quoted as saying. “Historically in some places there were relaxed regulations for lagoons because they were seen as not sophisticated… we’re seeing less of these special regulations now.
The article also acknowledges both Nexom’s proprietary SAGR® post-lagoon nitrification technology, as well as its leadership position in moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) for lagoons.
“The global community is recognizing the vital role lagoons have,” says Axius Water CTO and Nexom founder Martin Hildebrand in response to GWI’s article. “At Nexom’s core is the principle that lagoons are a sustainable, high-performance wastewater treatment process,” he says, citing “years of proven performance in effectively removing nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus to North America’s most stringent limits.”
The GWI article, by author Kelly Thompson, is listed within GWI’s “Market Map” series. It is available to GWI subscribers at https://www.globalwaterintel.com/articles/north-american-lagoons-seek-affordable-technology-upgrades-as-nutrient-regulations-loom.
