What: Lagoon based WW treatment systems have been extensively utilized by small towns and municipalities across North America. Although conventional aerated lagoons perform well in warmer months, removing organics and ammonia in cold climates proves more challenging. This presentation will review macro and micro considerations on adapting lagoon-based systems to accommodate nutrient reduction in cold climates.
Nutrient reduction data from several Montana lagoon systems (Fromberg, Big Timber, and Vaughn) utilizing post lagoon submerged attached growth polishing reactors for nutrient removal will be reviewed. New research and developments will be shared that make these systems more economically viable by reducing the overall size/footprint of the reactor and by simplifying the attached growth media specifications.
