What: Cold climate lagoon systems often struggle to meet stringent ammonia discharge limits, especially during winter when biological activity slows. Submerged Attached Growth Reactor (SAGR®) has proven effective in post-lagoon nitrification, consistently achieving effluent ammonia levels below 1 mg/L in water temperatures as low as 0.5°C. Recent research and pilot testing and data from a SAGR demonstration site have led to a significant advancement: the ability to reduce SAGR footprint and volume by 35–65% without compromising treatment performance. 

This presentation presents findings from the demonstration site in Blumenort and the pilot facility operating in Lorette, Manitoba, where SAGR systems were tested under elevated loading rates—up to five times the historical design standards. Despite the increased influent concentrations and reduced bed volumes, the optimized SAGR units maintained full nitrification, BOD and TSS polishing, and high levels of disinfection. These results confirm the robustness of the SAGR process and support revised design criteria that enable more compact installations.
