What: With over 100 lagoons in Nebraska and thousands in the US, let’s explore the dual benefits of lagoon systems, demonstrating their efficacy not only for basic limits but also for advanced nutrient management. Through a case study, we examine innovative solutions to enhance existing lagoon infrastructure, resulting in significant cost savings—tens of millions of dollars—compared to constructing a new mechanical plant at this 2.8 MGD facility. The optimized lagoon system will meet stringent nutrient limits, achieving Total Nitrogen (TN) levels of less than 15 mg/L and Total Phosphorus (TP) levels of less than 1 mg/L, while maintaining the operational simplicity inherent to lagoon-based treatment plants.
