Meet Tyler Friesen

Tyler Friesen is one of our project managers who has put in the work to really understand how we do things here at Nexom.

Q: How long have you worked for Nexom? 

A: Since the summer of 2017, so almost 8 years now. 

Q: How did you get to the position you are in now? 

A: I was hired as a Field Technician but took the opportunity to do project management by early 2018 when an opening came up.  

Q: What is your favorite part about Nexom and why? 

A: I appreciate Nexom’s people and company culture the most. No company is perfect but Nexom reliably respects its workforce and customers and the people we work with are fun, dependable, and care about each other. 

Q: What do you wish others in the wastewater industry understood that isn’t talked about enough? 

A: I don’t consider myself enough of an expert in the wastewater industry to know what should be talked about more. Working in project management here has taught me that a lot of hard feelings, difficult people, and tough circumstances can be worked with if you’re willing to be humble, approach a situation collaboratively and repeatedly focus the team on the goal. Picking up the phone and having a hard conversation may be the worst part of the job but when you can use that communication to turn a situation around that becomes one of the best parts of a job. 

Q: What project have you been a part of and are proud of that you want mentioned here?  

A: A job I managed/am managing recently that I am proud of is Constance Lake ON. It’s not yet started up (at the time of this Q&A), but the project was installed this past fall reasonably smoothly despite setbacks with concrete pours through close collaboration between myself, the operations team, engineering and our onsite subcontractor. Communication was clear and quick, and problems were discussed and solved with efficiency. I was able to learn a bit more about concrete and building construction and I’m looking forward to startup when the GC completes the remaining scope.
